The result of a collaboration between the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar and the Autonomous University of Lisbon, the Postgraduate Course in Underwater Archaeology is taught in accordance with a protocol signed in 2008 and revised on 13 October 2011.

This postgraduate course focuses on distance learning, through e-learning and video conferencing, giving anyone interested and residing outside the country the opportunity to enroll in the course.

It provides excellent training in underwater cultural, scientific and technological heritage, supported by a structure and curriculum that includes full support from teachers and contact with real projects and situations, whether in the field or in the laboratory.

The model of this cycle is based on the development of a diverse set of skills for excellent professional opportunities and for continuing master’s studies.

• Deepen knowledge in the area of ​​Archaeology, specializing the skills of graduates in the exercise of professional activity in an aquatic environment;
• Identify problems and solutions associated with the scientific-tourist exploration of underwater heritage, with a view to profitability, promotion and regional development;
• Establish processes for sustainable management of the environment, minimizing negative impacts on the environment or cultural heritage;
• Identify and characterize archaeological sites and contexts, in their environmental and cultural context, contributing to the detailed inventory of national and international archaeological resources;
• Train qualified human resources related to the aquatic environment, contributing to a more effective exploration of the coast and riverways, integrating them into the land use plan and making the most of their resources;
• Identify archaeological resources and integrate them into land use planning programs in order to attract investment, with the consequent creation of jobs and settlement of populations at local and regional level.
