Postgraduate Studies in Underwater Archaeology
Scientific Area
The Postgraduate Program in Underwater Archaeology, a result of collaboration between the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar and the Autonomous University of Lisbon, is taught in accordance with a protocol signed in 2008 and revised on October 13, 2011.
This postgraduate program focuses on distance learning, through e-learning and video conferencing, giving all interested individuals and residents outside the country the opportunity to enroll in the course.
It provides excellent training in the area of underwater cultural, scientific and technological heritage, supported by a structure and curriculum that includes full teacher support and contact with real-world projects and situations, both in the field and in the laboratory.
This program’s model is based on developing a diverse set of skills for excellent career prospects and for pursuing master’s degree studies.

- To deepen knowledge in the field of Archaeology, specializing the skills of graduates in the exercise of professional activity in aquatic environments;
- To identify problems and solutions associated with the scientific and touristic exploration of underwater heritage, with a view to profitability, promotion and regional development;
- To establish processes for sustainable environmental management, minimizing negative impacts on the environment or cultural heritage;
- To identify and characterize archaeological sites and contexts within their environmental and cultural framework, contributing to a detailed inventory of national and international archaeological resources;
- To train qualified human resources related to the aquatic environment, contributing to a more effective exploitation of the coast and waterways, integrating them into land use planning and maximizing the use of their resources;
- To identify archaeological resources and integrate them into land-use planning programs in order to attract investment, with the consequent creation of jobs and the retention of populations at the local and regional levels.
Graduates in Archaeology, History, Anthropology, Biology, Geology, and other degrees in the areas of Humanities, Earth Sciences, and Life Sciences.
Applicants from other fields or with other levels of education may be accepted after analysis and approval by the scientific committee.
