Specialization Course in Geopolitics and Security of the Mediterranean

Scientific Area

The emergence of new actors, dynamics, flows, and interactions in the Mediterranean region has resulted in new power struggles. Faced with this different scenario—compared to the past decade—the European Union finds itself strategically hostage, with new risks inherent to its actions and/or inactions. China, Russia, and Turkey have joined the established Gulf countries and North African powers as key players in the future of Mediterranean geopolitics. Concerns are no longer solely economic—given the countless valuable resources found in Mediterranean waters—nor purely political. This course addresses the current issues surrounding a region that, in the not-too-distant future, could shape and adjust international politics as we know it. The main characteristics of this region and all its actors will be analyzed in depth, with the aim of understanding and finding effective and lasting solutions. From a political and strategic perspective, the economic and energy constraints underlying the interest of new players in the Mediterranean will be analyzed, as well as the role the European Union will play in this chess game, and the potential impact of the European Union’s role in this game of chance. what (and when) we can expect from new waves of migration towards the Old Continent; the perspectives of NATO and Russia; the various legal, social and religious challenges; and the main changes that are approaching, given the strategies adopted.

The course will be held in person at the Autonomous University of Lisbon. Those residing or working in other districts of the country or abroad can attend remotely/online via Zoom.
