Freemasonry and Initiatic Societies

Scientific Area

History, Arts and Humanities

The Postgraduate degree in Freemasonry and Initiatic Societies presents some of the most emblematic and important associations of this type in Europe and the United States, in their history and origins, framing them in the eras of their foundations and the institutional and political reasons that founded them.

As the most representative, Freemasonry will naturally be in focus, also due to the significant number of Portuguese, European, and American members it comprises.

Other initiatic societies will also be addressed, such as the Rosicrucians, the Illuminati, the Carbonari, among others.

The curriculum is designed to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical experience, including visits to areas of Lisbon known for their Masonic symbolism and significance, as well as guided tours of Masonic temples with the interpretation of the symbolic meaning of each element.

In-person classes can be followed remotely

The acquisition and reinforcement of knowledge in a field that is rarely studied and even less widely known, yet has profoundly influenced Portuguese, European, and global historiography. From the moon landing to the French Revolution; from the Charter of Human Rights to American independence, Freemasonry has been present—shaping and reshaping itself at every step.

  • Historians, art students and scholars in the field of sociology
  • All those who are interested in this subject
  • Members of these same orders who wish to deepen their understanding, gaining insight into some of the political and historical developments associated with them.
