Specialization Course in Foreign Policy Analysis

The last few years have revealed major transformations in the landscape of International Relations, which are reflected in foreign policies and in the way states seek to structure and harmonize them. The end of the bipolar balance and the new strategic design resulting from it, as well as the diverse consequences of the dynamics of globalization, have placed serious problems on international actors – states, international organizations, NGOs, multinationals.
The Autonomous University of Lisbon, which has a long tradition in developing intensive courses in the field of International Relations, offers a Specialization Course in Foreign Policy Analysis.
This initiative aims to equip students with theoretical and practical knowledge and to stimulate debate around International Politics.
The course is taught in person, at the facilities of the Autonomous University of Lisbon (UAL).
- Capacity building in terms of analyzing the processes associated with the formulation and implementation of foreign policy (institutional structures, agenda setting, decision-making process and pursuit of objectives).
- Acquisition of essential concepts in the field of foreign policy studies.
- Acquisition of knowledge about the main instruments for implementing foreign policy by States.
- Understanding, through case studies, how foreign policies are formulated: the cases of the United States, Brazil, Russia, the People’s Republic of China, the European Union, and Portugal.
- Students from various cycles of Higher Education, namely in the areas of International Relations, Political Science, History, Sociology, Geography, Economics, Communication Sciences and African Studies;
- Members of the Armed Forces and Security Forces and Services;
- Officials from the Public Administration, specifically from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Internal Administration and the Ministry of Economy; Officials and senior technicians from Municipal Councils;
- Companies focused on internationalization, consulting and risk analysis; Journalists.
